Yet Another Victim of Recession - YSL Beaute

I just received a letter from Luxasia, leading distributor of big-brand names in fragances and cosmetics such asYSL Beaute, Lancome globally, that Yves Saint Laurent beauty products will no longer be available in Singapore with effect 26 October 2009.

The impending doom of YSL Beaute just contributes to the ever-shrinking selection of cosmetics and fragrances available here.

If this helps, YSL fragrances will continue to be retailed at 3 shopping outlets in Singapore - Tangs Orchard, Tangs VivoCity and Robinsons Raffles City.

Just a note, I always preferred the Coco Rocha YSL Elle parfum ad to the Anna Selezneva YSL Elle Shocking ad. Anna is gorgeous but lacks the youthfulness & uncommon beauty of Coco Rocha.

Quirky Art Show at Madrid Fashion Week

Photobucket

Whimsical but definitely not nonsensical, young Spanish designer Amalia Rodriguez showcases models in long dresses which are more like art pieces with strong statements on religion, American pop culture and the society today at large. Background created with fractal artwork in psychedelic colours from Jen. View more of her works here.

Dolce & Gabbana goes Victorian

Image and video hosting by TinyPic

Aaah, the romance, grey-blonde hair in loosely coiffed buns adorned by antique gold combs, sexy and yet modest at the same time crochet underwear, lace, tules, mesh, gauze everywhere and worn as socks for shoes, heavily layered gold coins, pearls and gems, big gemstone embellished cross secured by a single black silk ribbon to grace a lovely pale neck. Think Lolita and all things rich with a dark, English heritage. English gentlemen in silk tuxedos and suits intersperse the mysterious ladies on the runway. The show ends with bursts of selected colours in red leopard prints and of course - English garden roses. An inspirational collection for high street labels to create their new spring summer 2010 collection. Can't wait.

In the Spotlight - Aquilano Rimondi

I just discovered a new designer on style.com while browsing through the Milan Fashion week coverage. It is Day 3 of Milan Fashion week and things are looking brighter as more golds, sequins and luxury metal wove in brocades and jacquards cover the catwalks of old-timer Dolce & Gabbana and new label Aquilano Rimondi by Tomaso Aquilano & Roberto Rimondi who also design for Ferre. The Wall Street Journal (WSJ) had this to say about the duo's collection:

"Aquilano e Rimondi’s Heartbreaking Clothes of Staggering Beauty"

WSJ simply said their clothing was beautiful but impractical and whipped out a sweeping statement that which women would want to dress head to toe in Aquilano & Rimondi's garb and become completely invisible or swallowed whole because the clothing is overpoweringly gaudy and elaborate? I beg to differ. Some pieces are actually wearable for parties or interchangeable when mixed with different basic pieces from one's wardrobe. I cannot tolerate such shallow biasness - just look at Balmain's cocktail dresses (some are otherworldly inspired futuristic dresses, Rodarte's horrible POW (prisoner-of-war) of the future collection which so many people revel in and idolise?

Fashion Flops at Milan Fashion Week

Image and video hosting by TinyPic

Basically, Day 2 or the last day of Milan Fashion Week was a disaster. Cheap-looking prints from Emilio Pucci to raging copycats on the catwalk stage. Roberto Cavalli wants you to know his Spring Summer 2010 collection is a tribute to his granny. Wear mismatched ditsy floral prints in all dull colours. Bring back the mustards (dirty yellow), olives (dirty greens), mud, (dirty browns and yellows). Hurray to button-up all the way collars and to top it off, cover your neck with another silk scarf; of course to avoid showing off your signs of aging - wrinkly necks! Pyjamas are welcome at my slumber party and of course what kind of pyjama party is it without baggy pyjama pants?

Just Cavalli makes a Comeback

Not even the beauty of contrasting ethereal beauty of Oriental-modern mix inspired lace, chiffons, silks and floral prints by Antonio Marras, creative director at KENZO could match Just Cavalli's diverse range and spunky, hip collection for Spring Summer 2010 at Milan Fashion Week.

Chain trimmings for his dusty grey cropped motorcycle jeans, tan suede biker jackets, silver sequined cardigans worn over embroided floral appliques and kinky-designed lace lingerie, prints of snakes and trees & long forgotten floral & fauna from elven woods faraway on cream girly dresses, fringes, fringes and more gorgeous hippy fringes to welcome summer 2010, leopard print hair cuffs, huge cross prints for the evergreen rocker-style which is here to stay and even cheeky prints on dresses such as "Heel the world, make it a cavalli place".

The youthful range of Roberto Cavalli - Just Cavalli is finally back with a vengeance. Too long hasl high-street labels ruled the closets of teens and young ladies. Say "Adieu" to "Florentin-a"cocktail dresses for middle-age ladies. Here comes the new JC!

Mickey Mouse Runs Amok at ICEBERG

Would you wear them? Mickey mouse with washed out leopard prints, sheer gauze or risque crochet? What was the ICEBERG designer thinking?

London Fashion Week - It's a Wrap!

Image and video hosting by TinyPic

Yes, the London fashion week has ended days ago and everyone was raving about Burberry Prorsum's show. I thought it was completely boring and paled in comparison with Burberry Prorsum's Fall 2008 collection when Christopher Bailey had an influx of fresh and creative ideas with a strong symbolism or message - the warrior woman (remember the heavy nickel hexagonal bangles and iconic warrior bag and leather coats?)

However, after revisiting each piece from Burberry Prorsum's Spring-Summer 2010 collection, I realised the intricacies of each piece and the beauty of simplicity of each ruched skirt, folded belt, pleated dress and grecian top, scrunched leather legging, sequinned jacket, ruffled trimmings on the classic Burberry trench all in the shades of neutrals, nudes, golds & silvers which make them funky little pieces that are wearable to work. Accentuate with huge chunky arm candies in amethyst and amber.

I am once again won over by Burberry Prorsum.

Vlada goes blonde at Blumarine

Check ethereal bueauty - Russian supermodel Vlada Roslyakova's new platinum blonde hair, a stark contrast from being a redhead last season.

What a refreshing take after seeing so many stale or unwearable designs on the runway for this Spring Summer 2010.

Balmain lookalikes for less

Image and video hosting by TinyPic

If you are lucky and quick enough, you may get a chance to snatch premium designer knockoffs - shoes, bags or clothes at fast sell-out high street retail fashion outlets such as Zara, Mango, Bershka, H&M, Morgan and so on. In the recent years, Zara has been ripping off renowned designers such as Burberry Prorsum (remember the bags with huge studs?) , Christian Loubutin (watch those 4" pumps), Prada (bags), Miu Miu (bags)and more & more from Balmain (shoes, dresses, skirts, blazers). Thank God for that cos' who would be willing to pay thousands for one-off on-trend pieces that you would probably wear only once before stuffing it into the depths of your deep dark closets. I would find it smarter to invest in key, classic pieces such as a tailored blazer, grey tweed pants and essentials like ONE bag for work, ONE bag for weekend and ONE for shopping/ Fridays.

Lindsay Lohan in town for 3 days

Fashion icon and my style idol Lindsay Lohan is in Singapore not so much for the F1 race here but the after-race parties to accompany her girl-pal Samantha Ronson who will be DJ-ing here for the second time this year.

Luv her men's wool hat which adds a touch of class to her thigh-high tights, tux and shorts ensemble.

September Style Icon - Taylor Momsen

My Celebrity Style Twin

Have you found your Celebrity style twin? My September style icon & pin-up girl is none other than Gossip Girl star Taylor Momsen aka "Jenny Humpfrey". I dig Lindsay Lohan, Mary Kate and Ashley Olsen, and model style icons such as Iekeline Stange and Vlada Roslyakova.

Watch Miss Momsen rock every single outfit from the Gossip Girl sets to out-and-about in NYC. You can follow the latest news on the hot, young and upcoming star here.

Balmain inspired Zara booties

I wore them out yesterday for the first time.

Zara Fall Winter 2009

Over half of my wardrobe is filled with pieces from Spanish high street fashion label - ZARA. I absolutely adore their ability to produce quality designer rip-offs from time to time.

I have done a lovely montage of actual Zara pieces and inspiration from designers which they have ripped off and translated into Zara's Fall Winter 2009 collection. (Inspirations - : Prada - warrior women, Roberto Cavalli - grommets = tough women, Dolce & Gabbana - Purple fur coat)

The off-white fur vest in the background is an absolute must-have for me this season. Can't wait for it to be in stall already.

Dolce & Gabbana Obsession

Can you name all the bags above? Domenico & Stefano have christened each bag with a snazzy name depicting the personality of each carrier or owner-to-be, which can be found in the interior of each bag, clutch or purse.

I own 2 from the range - Miss Urbanette (petrol green bowler pictured) and a Miss Easy Way tote.

The Miss Easy Way range has been remade for seasons in different skins (ostrich, calf, pony, python) and an assortment of colours (outrageous patchworks to candy patent pinks & purples) My personal favourite is gunmetal patent.

What's ripe for picking this season

Rock the Trend

MANGO Fall-Winter 09 montage by me.

Perfect short boot for winter

It's September. The start of fall and all things brown, golden and red (think autumn leaves).
I have been eyeing my perfect ankle bootie since last month - the Marc Jacobs 3-buckle glossy patent leather boots. With just a 2.5inch heel, this may be the sole pair of designer rock n roll boots with a "walkable" kitten heel.

Available at Saks.com for USD 995 (tough price)
