The High Price of Fashion

Even tears cannot express how much sorrow I felt for the families and the victims of the Bangladesh garment factory collapse and recent fire where at least 362 people perished.

Last Tuesday, when the building owner was informed that there were cracks in the Rana Plaza building where the garment factory was located on the top 2 floors, the owner insisted that there was no danger even though the tenants on the bottom floors had evacuated. The garment factory managers even told their employees to carry on working if not they would not continue to get paid.

One of the suppliers who housed their workers in that fateful building was Spanish fashion retailer Mango. That day, those workers perished in the garment factory tragedy.

When you shop at fashion retailers like Mango, please take some time to think about how these retailers managed to keep the price of their retail goods so low. The simple answer is by exploiting the livelihoods of poor, impoverished people who are usually the sole breadwinner of their families in third world countries such as India, China, Philippines, Vietnam and Cambodia.

Mango has recently denied that they were involved in this tragedy and that they had been using suppliers who had been denying their workers a safe-working environment with decent standards fit for humans.

In light of this incident, I will not patronize Mango retail stores and I urge you to do so if you have a conscience until Mango promises to raise the workplace safety standards and conditions of their supplier's workers.

Sunday Street Style: Model Talk

Meet 23 year old Danish model, Rasmus Stendorph whom we met at a bar in Clark Quay, Singapore. We did a mini interview with Rasmus for today's Sunday Street Style feature.

Q. How is he like?

Unlike what you may think of a typical model, Rasmus is very cool, approachable and not at all standoffish.

Q. What he is wearing?

Rasmus is an avid backpacking traveler. His floral tropical print T-shirt is from Zara and his bag is from Ecuador. He bought his comfy black sneakers from Singapore.

Why we find him so cool.

Fresh faced young Scandinavian models with a relaxed style of dressing which screams "I am a traveler!" He does not look like a typical Dane but a global citizen of the world where one cannot simply put him in a certain category of dressing. Rasmus travels a lot, mainly because of the perks of his job and obviously this hobby influences his style.

3 questions for Rasmus
1. Where are you from?

I'm from Herning, Denmark.

2. What made you venture into modelling?

I was spotted at H&M (by a model scout) and thought that an opportunity like that only comes once.

3. What is your dream?

I wanna tell stories about people and cultures and their differences. And hopefully on tv too.

Below are some pictures of Rasmus when he is working as a professional model:

Style Secret - Thrift Fashion Edition

(Outfit of The Day - Hat: H&M - The New Icons Collection, Psychedelic rainbow tie-dye print dress: ASOS, Oxblood bra-top - Monki Sweden, Snakeskin print chain belt - BCBGMAXAZRIA)

I became obsessed with hats after my Scandinavian trip in February when I was practically inseparable with my bright purple Etro rabbit hair hair so much so that I tried to wear it with every outfit almost every day for 3 weeks in a row.

When I returned to Singapore and spotted the wide brimmed black wool hat on Lindsey Wixon for the H&M New Icons campaign at a ridiculously cool price of $14.99 Singapore dollars, I just had to get it and now I find myself experimenting with different ways on how to wear this beautiful hat in this tropical country.

It's perfect for sunny days, rainy days and you can be sure I will be featuring it more than once in my future fashion posts.

What do you think of this combination that I'm wearing and how would you pair your favorite hat?

Current Obsession: Valentino Rockstud Clear Studded Sandals

Image and video hosting by TinyPic

The Valentino clear rockstud chain mini handbag and convertible clutch has to be my favourite from the Rockstud collection even if it runs the risk of looking cheap due to the nature of the bag's main material being clear plastic.

The barely there shoes or clear shoes trend is further amplified and refined in the nude beige skin colour kitten heel Valentino rockstud sandals where the numerous straps are made of clear plastic material and the studs on them are shiny perfect crystals that make anyone wearing these feel like a star.

As for the Valentino Rockstud white tote bag, it is plain and simple in shape and design with the exception of studs - something I can't really get too excited about as I would prefer bigger studs and a unique design instead.

Tell us which is your favourite item from the Valentino Rockstud collection!

Anyway, here are two of my favorite models fooling around backstage at a runway show during fashion week.

Sunday Street Style: Bright Colours Mix Well

Image and video hosting by TinyPic

Meet Simon! I spotted Simon smoking outside the premises between popular night spot - Le Noir, the bar and TCC at Clark Quay in Singapore on a Friday night. He was apparently smoking hot and chilling out after work in an extremely dapper ensemble which I could not help but notice.

From his stylish red checked shirt with scribbles on (From Spanish label Desigual) down to his remarkably cool black patent leather shoes with contrasting white laces and red stitching detail, every inch of this man screams fabulous fashion sense.

I love the way how he could effortlessly make red checks and bright orange pants work so well together with a sharp looking designer black leather belt and shoes. His outfit for the night was smart casual menswear at it's best.

It would be a challenge trying to find someone else who can dress so well in Singapore. Simon really raised the bar here.

Reprise: Nightmare at Roberto Cavalli Paris

After my harrowing experience at the Roberto Cavalli Paris boutique with inflexible staff and my encounter with the rude and brazen store manager - Mr Denis Merlo, (Read: Tragedy at Roberto Cavalli with Mr Denis Merlo) I was unable to purchase the bright yellow python handbag I had wanted so badly for a special occasion which marked a milestone in my personal life.

I spent weeks thinking about it and finally decided to contact the Roberto Cavalli Rome boutique. I was assisted by a surprisingly polite and eager staff - Miss Alessandra Capuano who served me in perfect English. Not only that, she understood what I wanted and immediately shipped the bag over to my address in the UK once I made the payment. Although there were some silly problems involving UPS who bungled up the postal code and country destination which resulted in my poor parcel being delivered to and fro between two different European countries three times.

As you can see from the above pictures, I was very pleased when the items finally arrived. The bag looked even more gorgeous than the tatty one in the Roberto Cavalli Paris boutique which I had issues with (Read the original thread: Nightmare at Roberto Cavalli Paris ~ A Trilogy)

I would definitely make a trip down to the Roberto Cavalli boutique in Rome and Milan just to experience better customer service than in Paris.

Trend Alert: Celebrities in Crop Tops

It's the 1990s all over again with popular celebrities and supermodels spotting the crop tops and bra tops on the streets and at events.

From left to right: Cara Delevingne in a Bart Simpson cartoon crop top sweater, Twilight movie star Kisten Stewart in a daring bra top and high-waist underwear ensemble, Rihanna in classic rapper wear - white sporty crop tank top.)

Even more celebrities below spotted in a crop top this year except for one old photo of Mischa Barton in a crop top from years ago that I added in just to compare how different she looks like from before.

Top: (From left to right) One hit wonder Ashlee Simpson in a conventional all black outfit - a black bra top and shorts with a matching black blazer. Ever anorexic movie star Kate Bosworth looking extra gaunt an washed out in a blue striped crop top. Mischa Barton in a crop top that looks like it was made in the 1800s.

Bottom: (From left to right) Elle Fanning in a casual crop top, Mischa Barton in her heydays in a crop T-shirt top, Lindsay Lohan in a floral crop top and Miley Cryus sporting really bad hair she could sport in her later years in a cropped cardigan.

H&M - The New Icons Fashion Collection

The H&M - The New Icons fashion collection is an ingenious campaign and collection by using the fashion world's dearest supermodel icons on the high-fashion runway - supermodels such as Daphne Groenevald who was the face of Versace, Lanvin and Dior cosmetics, Joan Smalls who appeared in campaigns for Burberry and online luxury fashion retailer Net-A-Porter, Liu Wen who was the face of Calvin Klein and Lindsey Wixon who was the face of John Galliano, Dior, Miu Miu and Jill Stuart campaigns, who are the current sensation and adoration of the fashion world that also appeal to H&M's younger crowd.

I had no intention of buying anything from the H&M The New Icons Collection but I had to give in when I saw the striking resemblance of the faux suede waterfall necklace on my favourite supermodel - Lindsey Wixon which looked like the one Sasha Pivovarova wore down the Roberto Cavalli Spring Summer 2011 runway.

The black wool hat on Lindsey was perfect not only for shielding away the sun's harsh rays in summer but a stylish accessory that would enhance any simple bohemian or hippie style dressing which I absolutely love! At $24.90, I would be insane to not have purchased it.

Alas, the beautiful and simple black sheer maxi skirt has sold out.

CAMILLA Spring Summer 2013 at Australia Fashion Week: A Festival of Colours, A Feast For The Eyes

Georgia May Jagger opened the CAMILLA Spring Summer 2013 / 2014 runway show at Australian Fashion Week organised by Mercedes Benz Fashion Week Australia.

CAMILLA is an Australian fashion label that stays true to its bohemian, hippie and tribal roots and the CAMILLA Spring Summer 2013 / 2014 collection reflects the brand's core values in a free-spirited and colorful manner.

Below are more pictures of my favorite Australian fashion week runway show - CAMILLA S/S 2013 / 2014.

Mercedes Benz Australian Fashion Week: Camilla and Marc S/S 2013

To recap Day 1 of Australian Fashion Week sponsored by Mercedes Benz Fashion Week, it was nothing too much of an excitement or anything spectacular.

In fact the best outfit from the Camilla and Marc RTW Spring Summer 2013 runway show was a mixture of copycat designs from the Louis Vuitton Fall Winter 2011 runway and Dolce and Gabbana Fall Winter 2012 runway.

The gold corset bustier bodysuit appeared to be inspired by Dolce and Gabbana's signature style corset with ornate embroidery in gold and black as pictured below on model Sigrid Agren.

Below, we can see the high-waist see through skirt on the Camilla and Marc runway resembling the see-through skirt on Louis Vuitton's Fall Winter 2011 runway collection.

Talk about lack of originality in the fashion world - disappointingly, Australian fashion designer duo Camilla and Marc is no exception.

Saint Laurent Music Project ft. Best of The Worst

Image and video hosting by TinyPic

One mistake after another, Saint Laurent which was renamed last year from YSL - Yves Saint Laurent is now trying out an ad campaign which they call a music project features washed up rockers in their 40s and 50s such as Courtney Love, Marilyn Manson, Kim Gordon and Ariel Pink to represent the Parisian brand.

Not a smart move when the Saint Laurent Fall Winter 2013 collection features sexy underwear as shorts or pants and more youthful looking fashion apparels.

Below is Ariel Pink with a shocking resemblance to Lord Of The Rings fat hobbit - Samwise Gamgee.

A word of advice to Hedi Slimane, not sure if you want this to be your main Fall Winter 2013 Saint Laurent campaign.

Trend: Celine Trapeze Bag And Luggage Tote

Daria Werbowy fronts the Celine Ad Campaign for another season this Spring Summer 2013 in a smart casual menswear inspired suit - boxy pants and a blazer. Furry shoes no longer belong in the bedroom as slippers. Instead, the affluent can wear high heel furry pumps out and about to attract more attention to this cute but quirky trend that appeared recently on the runway during the recent Russian Fashion Week.

However, handbags again steal the limelight in any luxury designer label's fashion collection as iconic bag designs are reused season after season, only to be produced in different colours, fabrics, materials, texture and sizes.

This Spring Summer 2013, the iconic Celine Trapeze bag which spawned numerous copycat bags and the simple but adorable Celine luggage tote which resembles a happy face stages its usual comeback with Fashionistas and A-list celebrities alike toting both handbags on their arms or carrying them proudly as they head out and around town.

Below are pictures of our favourite celebrities seen sporting the Celine Trapeze bag and Luggage Tote in style:

Gossip Girl actress Leighton Meester toting a bi-colour Celine luggage tote in black and white.

Star of movies - Chloe, In Time, Les Miserables and Linda Lovelace, Amanda Seyfried is seen here with the Celine Tri-colour Trapeze bag.

Dakota Fanning seen here with the Celine Tri-colour Trapeze bag in red, white and brown.

Miley Cyrus and her bright lemon yellow Celine Luggage tote

Last but not least, I would like to introduce everyone to one of my favourite Asian models - Japanese fashion model ROLA (ローラ), who is a huge fan of Celine apparel and handbags. She owns both the Celine Tri-colour Trapeze bag and mini Celine baby blue Luggage tote. You can find out more about her on her official blog ローラ Official Blog「OK!OK!」 Although it is in Japanese, she posts her daily style pictures regularly.
